Quick Tips

Add +.07 exposure using your exposure compensation dial (+/-) to your snow pictures for whiter, brighter snow.

Position your subjects just inside a line of shade, like umbrella or door, for beautiful naturally lit portraits.

Use your flash outdoors at harsh hours of the day (11am-3pm) to eliminate raccoon eyes.

Add a bit of yourself to your shot to express your own point-of-view, literally.

Use a wide open aperture and a shutter speed of around 1/15th of a second with your camera stabilized in order to sharply capture the streaks of the fireworks.

Use an open or wide aperture like F6.3, 5.6, 4, 3.5 or 2.8 to blur your background and eliminate distractions.

Set your camera to continuous AF and continous drive when shooting sports. Roam both side of the field and follow the ball through your viewfinder, releasing the shutter when your child enters the picture.

Position heads on different levels when you have more than one person in the photo. Be sure to tey to get all faces on a similar plane so that everyone is in focus.

Ask your goofy smiling subjects to close their eyes and open them after a second, or look down and then up. It helps them to relax and give you a more natural smile.

Use one of your camera's scene modes like sports or night portrait when you are unsure of what type of setting to use and/or have little time to get the shot.

Tilt the camera slightly or moderately to convey motion or enrgy, but don't make your subject appear to fall out of the image.

Positioning your subject closer to the light source, like a window, will result in a "sculpted" or shadowed effect across the face.

Look for north facing window and position your subject's cheek toward the window.

Use snow as a natural reflector.

Why I Started Chasing Picture Perfection

This is my second stab at blogging. This time I feel like I have a vision. Rather than post diary entries of my life, which really may not be that exciting to anyone but me, I want to help you take better photos. I'm in the industry. It's part of my job, or should I say it's about job security, to help people that like to take pictures...take better pictures...so that they buy more equipment...to take more pictures. But really, I love photography. I have great equipment, including my new beautiful DSLR my husband gave me for Christmas (xo). And I love school. I still get nostalgic every fall. I played school a lot as a child and maybe should have gone into teaching instead of marketing. Although let's face it, these days neither career path offers job security. I'm a huge scrapbooker. And a novice photographer that has attended and produced hundreds of workshops and has experienced the industry's transition from film to digital first-hand. My photography centers on memory-making and my eye is drawn to images that make a statement, tell a story. I chase scrapbook-worthy images at every turn. I drive my family crazy while on vacation. I am thankful for an 8GB card to hold all my shots from the first-day of school. Yes, I can shoot non-stop, fast, and from the hundreds to choose from, I might be happy with three or four. But when I slow down and think about the images shot by some of my favorite photographers, try to emulate their style and technique, think about the basics, I can make a pretty good image. I know lots of rules, tips, and more. I want to share them with you. Because I know you are looking for ways to take better photos. So I hope you will find my postings useful.
